I Started A Book Club!

Well, hello there!

It’s been a while since I’ve written a well thought-out blog, but I am really excited to share something that I’m super passionate about (besides Microblading)… books!

I am an avid book consumer, and nowadays I consume almost all of my books via audiobook. I hate to admit that, but just like you, I’m a busy woman! I’m constantly shuttling my children to school, or on a long road trip to visit my parents in Southern California, so having audiobooks handy definitely helps with those long drives.

Also, I’ve found that my road rage has gone down significantly since listening to audiobooks (lol) and sitting in traffic doesn’t seem so bad when someone is telling you a story.

Over the years I’ve completed quite the collection of audiobooks, all of which have changed me for the better. I thought it would be helpful to share these books with others, in hopes that these books will deeply resonate for you too!

Without further ado, here’s my pick for the week:

Braving the Wilderness by Brené Brown.

I love this book for so many reasons, and just the title cover alone can help you understand why; “The quest for true belonging and the courage to stand alone”.

Growing up, I’ve never truly felt like I belonged anywhere. My parents immigrated to the United States with my older brother when I was a baby, and I was left behind in The Philippines with my cousins and Aunts and Uncles to take care of me.

Don’t get me wrong, my parents did what they needed to do to provide me with the best life that they could at the time. They didn’t abandon mean or isolate me, they needed to build their roots in a new country before bringing me on board and I am SO grateful for everything they’ve done for me.

When I moved to the United States, however, I was well… confused. By the time I immigrated and reunited with my parents, I had a new baby sister who was born while I was away. I had missed out on a lot, and had no idea how much that little part of my life affected how I found my place in this world today.

This book not only helped me find the courage to stand alone, but helped me understand that you can feel completely alone yet still belong. There is true strength in vulnerability.

Brené also touches on the current political climate and how we can come together, despite of our differences. I love how she profoundly discusses this topic, and love how it has helped me grow in compassion and love for those I don’t necessarily agree with on a political level.

I highly recommend this book, and I cannot stop referencing it enough when it comes to dishing out advice to my friends and my daughter.

If you want to give this book a listen, Brené brown narrates the book herself. You can find Braving the Wilderness audiobook here: https://amzn.to/2WwMNnD

Let me know what you think! I’d love to hear from you. If you’ve consumed Braving the Wilderness, comment below what you loved about it.
